How to Have Sex in the Shower

Shower sex may seem dangerous and risky but it’s actually super doable, and it can feel really sexy. Just be sure to use lube!

Remember, water doesn’t make a good lubricant for penetrative sex. Also, it’s easy to slip in the wet environment of the shower, so you should always have a hand on something for stability.

Standing Position

Shower sex sounds amazing in theory. It’s what every romantic movie and CW show ever promises you, the quick jump from soap suds to breathtaking orgasms. In real life, however, it can be a lot more complicated. Those wet enamel and tile floors are slippery, which makes shower sex dangerous unless you follow the right safety guidelines.

Gigi Engle, a London-based sex educator and author of All the F*cking Mistakes, suggests using a rubbery bath mat in the tub or shower for added friction. It’ll keep you and your partner from slipping in the heat of the moment. Another tip is to “use a thick, waterproof lubricant,” she says. “Water will do the trick, but a special lube will make it more fun.”

One of the best positions for shower sex is the standing position. Stand with one foot on the edge of the tub, bent, to keep your balance, then lift up the other to create a space for your partner to enter. This pose may feel a little clumsy at first, but it’s easy to get into once you find your stride.

This is a great position for anal sex, but your penetrating partner can also use it to reach around and play with the clitoris or breasts. And if you want to make it even sexier, try bringing a bullet vibrator to the shower for added sensations.

Against the Wall

There comes a time in every relationship where you and your partner look into the bathroom and decide, ‘We should definitely have shower sex.’ Perhaps you live with roommates who don’t have great hearing or the sheets are in the wash, or maybe you just want to spice up your morning routine. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of sexy ways to do sex in the shower — and it’s a great place for foreplay (or afterplay) before you get naked and go to bed.

One of the most popular shower sex positions is against the wall, which is also one of the safest for both partners. Stand up straight, brace yourself against the shower wall and use it for support, or bend at the hips if you want to be more comfortable. The penetrating partner then holds up one of your legs and enters astride you or, if you’re both feeling adventurous, they can also put their hands on the side of the tub and reach around to penetrate you from behind.

For this position, a non-slip shower mat is a must, as is a good quality lubricant that won’t wash away. And if you really want to make the experience more intimate, a stool or chair that fits in your shower would be ideal so that you don’t have to hold yourself up on the ledge of the tub.

Against the Side

Whether you’re a regular shower-goer or just trying it out, having sex in the shower can be fun and sensual — but only if you know how to do it correctly. Between the slippery floor and free-flowing water, shower sex can get a little complicated, even for sexperts who are used to it.

“The sex positions that work best are ones that keep both partners safe and in control,” White says. Fortunately, there are plenty of options, including the shower-safe Missionary position. In this position, one partner keeps their back against the wall and the other wraps their arms and leg around them to help stabilize themselves. They can then pleasure each other with hands, lips, toys (just make sure they’re waterproof!), noses, or whatever else they feel like.

Another shower-safe option is the Cowgirl, which can be performed in a standing or seated position. For this position, have your lover stand behind you with their feet on the floor or on a shower bench and then straddle them, facing away from each other. You can then enjoy boob play, fingering, or sex with their anal or vagina, depending on your comfort level.

Bringing a vibrator or dildo into the shower can be a great way to add extra excitement to any of these sexy shower-friendly positions. Just be sure to use a waterproof one so that you don’t get your soapy hands in the mix.

Downward Dog

Just like pool sex or sex on the beach, shower sex sounds hot in theory but often ends up being painful or awkward. But the good news is that it’s totally possible to do sex in the shower without feeling gross or getting hurt—as long as you follow some expert tips.

White says the safest position for first-timer shower sexers is to have your partner bend over with her hands against the wall (or the grab bar, if available) and you stand behind her, preferably on a nonslip mat, to provide stability. If you have a long enough tub, you can also lie down together, which makes for a super intimate and sensual move.

Once your partner is in the downward dog position, she can please you by grazing her fingertips over your bare skin and rubbing against you. She can also use her fingers to stroke you sexily and play with any of your erection-enhancing toys.

If you want to add a bit of penetration to this pose, have your partner raise one leg and place it on the edge of the tub or a footrest. From here, they can penetrate you with a strap-on dildo or penis or even finger your cock while you’re in the water. Just remember, water is not a lubricant, so you’ll need to add a good quality sexy lube for best results.
